Being Truly Alive:
What the Rule of St. Benedict Teaches Us About Living Fully, Simply and With Meaning
“Is there anyone here who yearns for life and desires to see good days?” St. Benedict asks at the start of his classic text for monastic life. Today, an increasing number of lay people are rediscovering the timeless wisdom of The Rule with its emphasis on listening, community, simplicity, hospitality, prayer and praise. This retreat, with award-winning author, former PBS-TV and Wall Street Journal reporter, and Benedictine lay associate Judith Valente will explore how those of us in the secular world can practice monastic values to deepen our interior life, better serve God and others, re-awaken to wonder, and experience being truly alive.
Loyola Retreat House, together with Heart to Heart Communications, is excited to welcome Judith Valente, author, Pulitzer Prize finalist, and Benedictine oblate to lead this retreat. Her works include: The Art of Pausing: Meditations for the Overworked and Overwhelmed; Atchison Blue: A Search for Silence, A Spiritual Home and a Living Faith, the memoir of her stays at a Benedictine monastery; and How To Live: What The Rule of St. Benedict Teaches Us About Happiness, Meaning and Community. She is also the author of two poetry collections. Judith worked previously for The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and PBS-TV and has written for USA Today, U.S. Catholic, America, and National Catholic Reporter. She gives frequent talks across the country on how to live a more contemplative life in the secular world.
